Argentina had been seeing violence in the early 1970s but in 1973, when Juan Domingo Peron returned to Argentina, elected as President, he was greeted by his nationalist peronist supporters and the communist subversives who pretended to be his supporters. They were predominantly part of the communist terrorist group called the Montoneros. Peron and his peronist ideology rejects both capitalism and communism.
After clashes between the nationalists and the communist subversives, the Montoneros radicalized into a full out communist terrorist organization and it had the so called Revolutionary Army of the People (ERP) as its ally. These communist terrorists were proxies of the Russians and the Cubans.
Juan Domingo Peron had started to get very weary of the communist forces who had pretended to support him and the final straw occurred when Peron’s labor syndicate was martyred in a bombing by the Montoneros.
President Juan Domingo Peron started to see just how violent and dangerous the communist terrorist forces were, so his Social Security Minister José López Rega, set up the Argentine Anticommunist Alliance, also known as Triple A, to really take the fight to the subversives. The Triple A fought alongside the police and armed forces in the fight against these violent communist terrorists.
On July 1st, 1974, Juan Domingo Peron died so his Vice President and widow Isabel Peron took the position of President. It was under Isabel Peron where a large part of the fighting against the extremely violent communist terrorists would occur.
At the height of the insurgency in 1975, there were around 2,000 terrorists, and they led a campaign of kidnappings, assassinations, and bombings which targeted innocent people.
On February 5th, 1975, President Isabel Peron signed the first decree of annihilation as it called for the military to “annihilate the actions of the subversive elements that acted in the Province of Tucumán “. The communist forces would be defeated in the small northern province.
On August 27th, 1975, Jorge Rafael Videla was appointed as the head of the Argentine armed forces.
On October 6th, 1975, President Isabel Peron declared martial law to further crackdown on the communist insurgents amid growing attacks. She ordered a complete and total annihilation of the communist forces not just in Tucumán Province but in the whole country.
During her Presidency, especially in 1975, the Triple A which was loyal to her and the fight against the communist terrorists, inflicted very serious losses on them killing 359 of them. In her brief time as President over 400 of the terrorists would end up dead.
Despite Isabel Peron’s government inflicting the bulk of the losses on the Montoneros and ERP terrorists, she would become victim of a great stab in the back by Videla with support of the corrupt Gerald Ford administration in the United States.
Jorge Rafael Videla and the Argentine military junta largely cracked down on civilian communist supporters while under Isabel Peron, the bulk of the losses for communist terrorists occurred.
